Haruka & Michiru

This was a fun piece of fan art for a sailor moon fan fiction story I am in the midst of writing. Thought it would be a 'cover' for the story.

Avatar

I've gotten bored with my current avatar on my fanfiction.net profile so I decided to create a new one tonight. As I am currently fixated on the Ami/Sailor Mercury x Makoto/Sailor Jupiter pairing I decided to incorporate SD versions of them in the drawing and this is what I ended up with. Now, if only I really looked like my avatar! lol

Differences and Tolerance

Abomination

My art is about expression. Expressing my feelings the best way I know how. While it might not convey to everyone the particular issue I am addressing at the moment, it is more than enough for me. I've heard that something always hits close to home when it affects a loved one, be it friend, family or spouse. Last weekend a problem the GLBT community has been facing hit especially close to home for me. Literally and figuratively. A family member of mine was gay bashed in my neighborhood. Around the corner where we live. Fortunately, he got away lightly by running for his life, no part of him broken or bloody.

What's unfortunate is the NYPD, who finally showed after being repeatedly summoned but did nothing to apprehend the attackers a couple of us saw filing into a house nearby. The police officers told us to contact the detectives after my relative recovered from his attack. I was disappointed but unsurprised at the callous and lazy approach of these officers. But what truly blew me away was the powerless feeling that came over me when I saw the group of fifteen kids, yes kids, who were still looking for a fight after my relative ran away. What can one do when surrounded by such a large number?

Anyway, this piece isn't really about my feelings of fear but came about after the incident. Any difference that is ridiculed, feared or misunderstood is still viewed as a threat. I had thought by now we lived in a society where tolerance had more or less replaced violence but it's such a naive thought. And any attempt to enlighten ignorance is deemed menacing. This post isn't meant to sound heavy-handed, nor am I trying to preach from atop the soapbox. Just the opposite.

I have a hard time with words, so this is a bit difficult to write. But, if there is anyone reading this that is different in any way, please keep going no matter what. Don't let hopelessness overtake you despite what others say and do. Be yourself and don't give up.

What happens when we're pulled in completely different directions? What's right and wrong and are they even obvious?

A Banner or two...

Last weekend I received a request from a friend of mine, Valisa. She asked me to make a customized banner for her blog, something cute, eclectic and ultimately showing her personality. I worked with her for a couple of hours and the end result is what I have below.

I am rather proud of it, still not quite believing that I did that. I wouldn't mind getting commissioned to do more personalized banners. It was a lot of work but fun for me. It was also easy work compared to most of my other clients because my friend knew exactly what she wanted. For those of you that want to know, I did this on Corel Painter using the acrylic brush for outlines and digital watercolor for the rest.

Pygmalion and Galatea

In Greek mythology there is a story about Pygmalion, a sculptor who falls in love with the statue he created. After refusing the women of the village, Pygmalion sets to work on a statue. As the days pass he falls deeper and deeper love with the emerging figure. When the statue is completed he prays to Aphrodite to make her real. She gives in and the statue becomes a living breathing woman named Galatea.

Now, you're probably wondering where I'm going with this. I have a friend E who is a constant muse and inspiration to artists all over. She is without a doubt one of the most intriguing people I have ever had the fortune to meet. Unlike Galatea however, she is flesh and blood. It is an opposite situation, where after meeting our friend E, artists try to create and capture her in all her enigmatic glory. Others try time and time again to snare pieces of her, myself included. My attempts fall woefully short but the process is always fun no matter what.

The River Nymph

It seems like a long time has passed since I updated this blog. I've been working on stuff here and there but I haven't been rushing myself like I used to. This piece was created for the eventual Cafepress account. I say eventual because the urgency to get lots of work online has left me and now instead I suppose it's just plain old laziness.

Duality

My friend E is most unexpected in manner and everyday appearance. Duality is my attempt at delving under the surface.

More Digi Things and Some News

The order of the pics - 1. Jeff Kromer, 2. Lana Gentry, 3. Breana , 4. Cathy McShannon

Today I worked up the nerve to ask C at The Lost Gallery what I needed to do to become a featured artist. His response was, 'You just have to ask.' So, as of tomorrow I will be one of the Lost crowd. This is really exciting because from the moment I was aware of The Lost Gallery on myspace I wanted to be a part of it but I never thought I was good enough or that my work was relevant. Friendship and support can go a long way however and along with support from friends old and new I have begun to see that yes, I am good enough and getting even better by the minute.

I'm thrilled because this means I will have more exposure and hopefully more commissions/sales. It's a step in the life I want to create for myself.

Digital Things

This one is a tattoo design called 'liberty within the confines'. I'm not sure yet if I'm going to actually get this as a tat or design something else but the concept itself is very personal to me. The second digital piece is a quick portrait of a new friend of mine.
